Boston could use another luxury hotel brand in the city, albeit in the right location and operated by a team of top-tier owners that know the city well.
That was the consensus of panelists at the Hotel Equity and Lender Perspectives conference, held at the Westin Boston Waterfront last week.
Although there are four or five luxury brands already located here – like the Fairmont and Ritz lines – several panelists said they are considering bringing their own high-end properties to Beantown.
Hilton Worldwide, which operates Waldorf Astoria luxury hotels, has been exploring multiple opportunities to bring its own luxury line to Boston, said Matthew Sparks, senior vice president of luxury and corporate development for Hilton. He did not, however, specify those opportunities.
“We’re definitely interested in the Boston area,” Sparks said. “Every major market in North America was stressed from a rates standpoint in the last few years. But we’re anticipating rate growth of about 8 to 10 percent in 2012. If you compound that out a couple years, there should be great rate recovery … in Boston.”
Thomas Papelian, Marriott International’s senior vice president of hotel development, said he would like to see a J.W. Marriott, the company’s luxury line, in Boston. There are several opportunities the company would like to explore in the city, he added.
