MA Housing Agency Recovers After Corruption Probe

Plagued by scandal for years, the Springfield Housing Authority is enjoying a clean bill of health.

Executive Director William Abrashkin said the agency has received a letter from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development clearing it of all remaining management and financial issues stemming from a 2003 audit.

Abrashkin told the Republican newspaper of Springfield it was a successful resolution to the continuing effort to clean up the housing authority after a lengthy federal corruption probe.

Former executive director Raymond Asselin is serving a 9-10 year prison sentence after pleading guilty in 2006 to defrauding the taxpayer-funded agency out of more than $6 million.

Several members of Asselin’s family were also charged in the case. (AP)
