Boston's South StationThree state agencies that lease space from the MBTA at Boston’s South Station are planning to move out, costing the cash-strapped agency millions of dollars in rent.

The decision by the Division of Banks, the Division of Insurance, and the Department of Telecommunications and Cable to move to more affordable private space in the South End could cost the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Agency $6.2 million in two and a half years.

The move comes as the MBTA is asking the state for a financial bailout and is considering fare increases and service cuts.

David Perini, commissioner of the Division of Capital Asset Management, which is in charge of negotiating the move, said the move is warranted because of the savings and because South Station lacks room. (AP)
