The Massachusetts unemployment rate dropped to 6.5 percent in February, dipping below the national unemployment rate for the first time since rising above it in November 2013, according to statistics from the Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
The Bay State’s jobless rate this month was down 0.3 percent from the previous month and 0.4 percent from February 2013. The national jobless rate in February gained 0.1 percent from its January rate, reaching 6.7 percent. The Massachusetts unemployment rate jumped ahead of the national unemployment rate for the first time in six years in November 2013.
Since February 2013, Massachusetts has added 47,600 jobs and the private sector has added 50,500 jobs. For the month, the state added 3,800 jobs and the private sector added 3,000 jobs. Revised numbers show the economy lost 3,900 jobs in January. Initial reports stated 4,500 jobs were lost during the month.
Over the month, professional, scientific and business services added 6,200 jobs; trade, transportation, and utilities gained 3,200 jobs; government added 800 jobs; and manufacturing and information each added 400 jobs.
Leisure and hospitality lost 3,600 jobs over the month. Other sectors recording job losses for February include financial activities (1,600 jobs lost), education and health services (900 jobs lost), construction (700 jobs lost) and other services (300 jobs lost).
