Ten public housing programs in the Bay State have received a total of $645,748 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help public housing residents find jobs that lead them toward economic independence.
HUD awarded nearly $15 million to more than 200 public housing authorities across the country, according to a statement. The funding will allow public housing authorities to hire program coordinators who work directly with residents to connect them with local education and training opportunities, job placement organizations and local employers.
"Family self-sufficiency programs have a proven track record of helping families succeed," said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. "When families are given the tools they need to join a skilled workforce they move beyond HUD’s rental assistance programs to self-sufficiency."
The following Massachusetts public housing programs received HUD funding:
- Boston Housing Authority – $69,000
- Brockton Housing Authority – $69,000
- Fall River Housing Authority – $69,000
- Framingham Housing Authority – $69,000
- Holyoke Housing Authority – $47,744
- Lowell Housing Authority – $65,000
- Lynn Housing Authority & Neighborhood Development (LHAND) – $53,074
- Malden Housing Authority – $69,000
- Somerville Housing Authority – $67,465
- Worcester Housing Authority – $67,465
