The Massachusetts unemployment rate fell to 6 percent in April, but the state lost a total of 1,600 jobs over the month, according to statistics from the Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

April’s jobless rate was down 1 percent from this time last year and 0.3 percent from March. The national unemployment rent is 6.3 percent.

Over the month, jobs were down 1,600, with private sector jobs down 3,000. Since April 2013, Massachusetts has added a net of 46,200 jobs, with 49,400 jobs added in the private sector and 3,200 lost in the public sector.

The areas of trade, transportation and utilities; financial activities; construction; manufacturing; government; and other services all reported job gains for the month. Meanwhile, leisure and hospitality; professional, scientific and business services; education and health services; and information recorded job losses for April.

The department revised its March estimates upward to 9,200 jobs from the 8,100 jobs previously reported for the month.
