Massachusetts added 300 jobs in July, increasing the total unemployment rate to 7.2 percent, according to preliminary estimates from the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development released today.
According to the agency, the private sector added 2,500 jobs in July. Leisure and hospitality; trade, transportation and utilities; information; financial services; and professional, scientific and business services all posted job increases. Construction jobs remained level over the month.
The greatest year-over-year increases were posted in construction, 4 percent or 4,600 jobs; other services, 2.5 percent or 3,100 jobs; and professional, scientific and business services, 2.4 percent or 11,600 jobs.
Month-over-month, education and health services, government, manufacturing and other services lost jobs. The biggest month-over-month decrease was in government, which lose 2,200 jobs.
Compared with the 6.8 percent unemployment rate posted in July 2012, unemployment increased 0.4 percent last month.
