Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is seeking public input on drafted air quality permits for a proposed natural gas-fired power plant in Salem.

Footprint Power Salem Harbor Development LP wants to construct a 630-megawatt electric generating facility with additional 62 megawatt generating capacity under summer conditions. The plant would be located at 24 Fort Ave., near the Salem Harbor Station, a coal-fired power plant that will be closed permanently.

The draft for the proposal can be viewed here. Public comments can be submitted up until Oct. 11.

MassDEP will not issue any final plan approval unless and until the state Energy Facilities Siting Board (EFSB) has issued its approval as required by Massachusetts General Law. However, MassDEP has reviewed the air quality impact analysis submitted with the application and does not believe the proposed facility will significantly impact air quality in the area.
