As part of an effort to speed up Green Line service, the MBTA is proposing the elimination of two stops on the B line.

During a public meeting Thursday night, MBTA officials outlined the changes which call for eliminating the BU West, St. Paul Street, Pleasant Street and Babcock Street stops. In their place, two new stops would be added: one to the west of the existing BU West stop and another between Pleasant and Babcock streets.

The goal of the $8.4-million project is to reduce travel times on the often-delayed Green Line and improve safety, according to the MBTA. The project is now in the 30-percent design phase and also would include a widening of Commonwealth Avenue’s median and additional left-turn lanes.

The project could be put out to bid as soon as late 2015, with construction taking up to 18 months.

In the meantime, Green Line riders with smartphones will at least have a better handle on when the next trolley will arrive. On Thursday, the MBTA launched the first phase of its real-time Green Line tracking project, which provides information on trolley arrival times to third-party apps. The information is only available for above-ground trolleys, but will be expanded as soon as this winter, according to MBTA officials.

Real-time tracking has been available for the Red, Orange and Blue lines since 2010.
