Weekend commuter rail service to points south of Boston that had lost it will be restored later this year, MassDOT announced Tuesday.

Riders will be able to travel between Boston’s South Station and stops on the Plymouth/Kingston, and Greenbush Lines beginning Dec. 27, according to MassDOT. Saturday service on the Needham line will also be restored.

The trains are set to run on timetables similar to schedules that were cut over two years ago after cost-saving measures and fare hikes brought on by a transportation reform law.

"While we often must make difficult decisions in balancing the system we want and the system we can afford, I’m pleased that today we can once again provide weekend service to these communities," MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott said in the statement.
