A new report says the number of Massachusetts residents working part-time jobs has jumped 18 percent in the first eight months of the year, an indication that the economic recovery has been weak.

The study shows the number of people in the state who have taken part-time work because they were unable to fund full-time jobs has nearly quadrupled since 2000.

The analysis was conducted for The Boston Globe by Northeastern University’s Center for Labor Market Studies.

The analysis found that black and Hispanic residents of the state are more than twice as likely as whites to be underemployed.

With so many people working part-time jobs because companies are reluctant to hire full-time workers, consumer spending suffers as people cut out luxuries. (AP)
