The developer proposing to create a $170 million tower near the site of Anthony’s Pier 4 restaurant in Boston’s Seaport could get the green light tomorrow from the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) to change the project to apartments.
New England Development is awaiting word to move forward with its plan to build 357 apartments, retail space and underground parking in a 21-story tower next to Anthony’s Pier 4 restaurant. The original plan called for office space as part of the project’s final mix.
While the restaurant would be spared in the first stage of construction, it will eventually be razed and a public park will take its place. But the restaurant may be resurrected in another part of the new project, where a hotel, another residential property, and more retail space are planned.
But the developer still needs BRA approval of the project amendment. The development lies in an area currently constrained by specific zoning restrictions. If the BRA board goes for it Thursday night, the city agency would need to petition the zoning commission to allow the project.
The zoning commission would likely see the proposal in January.
"They’re only going to recommend the project to the BRA board if staff feels comfortable with it being approved," said Melina Schuler, BRA spokesperson. "We would anticipate its approval."
