The man behind popular pubs The Times and The Littlest Bar has a new project: The Merchant, a new American brasserie-style restaurant set to open this winter.

Francis Delaney joined with Patrick Grace, the original owner of The Littlest Bar, to reopen the spot in 2008 after the original Province Street location closed after the building was bought in 2006. The site was torn down and replaced by the 45 Province condominium building, as Banker and Tradesman previously reported. Delaney then opened The Times in 2010.

The Merchant marks a change for Delaney, whose last two projects have been Irish pub-style bars and restaurants. His newest addition will be a "stylish" and "creative" brasserie, which the restaurant’s twitter account defined as "a restaurant with a relaxed setting."

The Merchant will be open for lunch, dinner and late-night dining (including a raw bar). The Franklin Street location accommodates 200 seats as well as two 30-person private dining rooms.

With a seven-day, all-alcoholic beverages license bought from former Charles Street restaurant Pigalle, the Merchant is advertising that it will have 36 different beers on tap, craft cocktails and a wine list.

The menu is helmed by Matthew Foley, the former sous chef at Craigie On Main in Cambridge.

The new restaurant will fill the space once occupied by the London Harness Co., which closed its Downtown Crossing location in 2009, citing "the deteriorating retail environment in Boston’s Downtown Crossing coupled with the weak overall economic conditions."

According to The Merchant’s website, as first reported by Boston Restaurant Talk, the restaurant will open at 60 Franklin St. in December, although a specific day has yet to be determined.
