A North Andover municipal employee charged with embezzling nearly $30,000 from the town has been fired.

Town manager Mark Rees told The Eagle-Tribune that purchasing director Joseph Lydick was hand delivered a letter on Tuesday notifying him of his termination.

Forty three-year-old Lydick, of Derry, N.H., had been on unpaid leave since his arrest last month.

Lydick’s job included selling surplus town property, including plows, trucks and other equipment, on eBay. Police allege he asked winning bidders to make checks out in his name.

Police say he wanted to use the money to buy his girlfriend an engagement ring.

He has pleaded not guilty and is free on personal recognizance. Efforts to reach Lydick were unsuccessful. (AP)
