Collaborative office environments have been the rage in the tech sector for some time, driven by the assumption that collaborative workspaces encourage creativity. International education firm EF Education First is taking the design to a new level.
Its 10-story North American headquarters, opening today in Cambridge, has no private offices at all. The $125-million, 300,000-square-foot building at 8 Education St. in the North Point neighborhood will contain 100 percent open-plan workspaces overlooking the Charles River.
Each floor contains up to 16 flexible workspaces, while the ground floor and mezzanine levels include 31,000 square feet of public space and a 440-seat restaurant.
Gov. Deval Patrick and Swedish architect Gert Gingardh are scheduled to attend Thursday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, which will be punctuated by a 1,000-person flash mob marking the company’s 50th anniversary and a performance by Paraguay’s Recycled Orchestra of Cateura. The group of young musicians plays instruments made out of materials salvaged from the city’s landfill.
Skanska USA has been selected as the construction manager for the project.
