The Patrick administration has signed a bill benefiting a Massachusetts insurer that it strongly opposed two years ago.
Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray enacted a law helping the Savings Bank Life Insurance Co. of Woburn six days after his campaign committee reporting receiving a maximum $500 contribution from the insurer’s chief executive officer.
Gov. Deval Patrick said Monday he didn’t know about the contribution, but he knows the lieutenant governor and he would not engage in a quid pro quo. SBLI says it’s researching the matter.
Patrick says the administration decided to let SBLI begin charging different life insurance rates for men and women so it would be treated like other insurers and keep its jobs in Massachusetts.
