A suspected bank robber was hospitalized Friday after a brief chase ended with a police officer shooting one of two suspects in an Arlington bank robbery.
James P. Riley, 36, of Quincy, and Shawn T. Bambushew, 25, of Everett, were charged with bank robbery, assault by means of a dangerous weapon and failure to stop for a police officer. Other charges in the case could still be pending.
According to police, one of the two suspects entered a Leader Bank branch on Massachusetts Avenue in East Arlington on Friday afternoon. Police Chief Frederick Ryan said that suspect did not show a weapon during the bank robbery, though surveillance footage showed a bulging object underneath his jacket.
Officers who arrived on the scene around 2:40 p.m. tracked down the getaway car based on descriptions bank employees gave them. After a brief pursuit, Riley brandished a gun in their direction, and an officer drew his service weapon, fired and struck Riley, police said.
Riley was sent to an area hospital for treatment. Today, Ryan said his condition was serious, but stable.
The officer who fired upon him was not injured, though he was also treated at a hospital and released. Ryan said the officer was placed on administrative leave, a routine protocol in such matters.
Ryan described the bank branch in Friday’s robbery as "well-managed and well-trained" and said the bank employees’ response during and after the robbery was critical to officers’ success tracking down the suspects.
He also said police are looking at a number of other robberies in the area to determine whether the suspects in Friday’s robbery have been involved in other previous bank robberies.
The case is still under investigation, and anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Arlington Police at (781) 643-1212.
