Quincy is jumping into the race to tempt biotech companies to new digs south of the Cambridge life sciences epicenter, according to reports.

The Quincy Chamber of Commerce is readying a $100,000 push to lure biotech companies to the city, which offers cheaper rents and, like Kendall Square, is on the subway’s Red Line.

The chamber will start the marketing campaign when the 2012 BIO International Convention hits Boston in June. The city has an uphill battle, as Quincy is not known for biotech innovation, or for biotech of any sort. And it’s not just a quick walk to the center of all things techie, MIT, like lab and office space in Cambridge.

But according to reports, the chamber is touting the Crown Colony office park, the old shipyard, and a revitalized Quincy Center as ideal locations for biotech firms. And Quincy does have four stops on the Red Line that feeds directly to Kendall Square.
