Prospective buyers put more than 4,000 single-family homes under agreement in March for the first time since last June, according to the Massachusetts Association of Realtors.
March was the 11th straight month of increases in pending sales in the state. In all, 4,519 homes were put under agreement compared to 3,256 in the same month a year earlier, an increase of nearly 40 percent.
Pending sales were up 34 percent compared to February, when 3,368 single-family homes were put under agreement.
The number of condos put under agreement was 1,854 compared to 1,422 in March 2011, a 30 percent increase. March’s condo totals were also up 45 percent compared to the 1,277 units put under agreement in February.
The association records a "pending sale" when a purchase-and-sale agreement is signed.
In a statement, the association said it thinks the Massachusetts housing market is "taking important steps towards market recovery with each successive month."
