Boston-based architectural/engineering firm CBI Consulting Inc. has redesigned and will oversee reconstruction of Eaton Condominiums, an 18-unit South Boston complex that was destroyed by a 2008 New Year’s Eve seven-alarm fire.

Located on Emerson Street, the historic building was erected in 1887 as the Hotel Eaton and subsequently converted into condominiums and family efficiency apartments.

The Jan. 1, 2008 blaze essentially destroyed the building, killing two residents and displacing the rest.

CBI Consulting Inc. was retained last spring to begin design work on the complex, which is situated a block from Broadway and L Street in South Boston. The renovation work includes expanded stairways, replacement of the elevator, the addition of handicap accessibility and inclusion of a sprinkler system.

Construction work is slated for completion by mid-2009.  Paul J. Rogan Co. of Braintree will serve as general contractor for construction efforts.
