In the past three years, more than 200 new companies and 4,000 new jobs have moved to Boston’s Innovation District, according to a report from the Boston Redevelopment Authority.
The report said that since the district’s creation in January 2010, growth in the South Boston waterfront neighborhood has spread across a variety of business sectors with a range of small, mid-scale, and large companies. Innovation District expansion is on target to continue, with more than 2,500 new jobs already announced.
"Dynamic companies want to be part of Boston’s innovation community, and part of our larger community," Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said in a statement. "They want to make contributions to the community through their expertise, time, and resources. I have never in 20 years been more optimistic about Boston’s future. We are setting trends, not following them."
The report said that technology companies contributed 30 percent to new job growth. Twenty-one percent of the new jobs are in creative industries, like design and advertising. Greentech and life sciences are also growing, with 16 percent of new jobs in these areas
Of the new companies, 11 percent are in the education and nonprofit sectors. Forty percent of the new firms share space in co-working spaces and incubators. And a fourth of the new companies are small-scale, with 10 or fewer employees.
