Boston’s Back Bay submarket remains the city’s most active retail district with more than 20 new businesses planning to open this year, according to a new report.
On Boston’s Newbury Street, the average asking rent in 2010 is $120 per square foot, up from $110 per square foot in 2009, according to CB Richard Ellis’ (CBRE) Summer 2010 Urban Retail Markets Report.
Despite occupancy dropping to roughly 80 percent at the end of 2009, this year’s resurgence of national and international retail interest and lease signings have absorbed much of the vacancy and increased asking rents nearly back to pre-recession levels, the report said.
New international brands have leased space along Newbury Street, including AllSaints Spitalfields, Ted Baker, & Ben Sherman and recent announcement of flagship locations for Converse, Diane Von Furstenberg and Joe’s American Bar & Grill.
"Although recovery is not yet complete, our findings show an increase in demand and activity in the top retail locations in the Americas," said Anthony Buono, executive managing director of CBRE’s Retail Services.
