A Boston-based developer has received approval to convert one of downtown Haverhill’s last vacant buildings into multifamily housing.

RISE Together plans to construct 42 residential units while redeveloping the ground floor of 86 Essex St. into retail space. The developer also plans to restore the exterior of the seven-story, 1910-era building.

RISE Together is an MBE development and investment company founded by CEO Herby Duverné.

Haverhill-based Fishbrooke Design Studio is designing the project, which received final approvals from Haverhill officials this week.

“After sitting vacant for years, this building has significant potential, and we believe residents will be excited to see it activated with ground floor retail for the city to enjoy. Our ideal vision is to partner with a local business as a tenant on the ground floor, to help bring vitality to the space while also benefiting existing local business,” Duverne said in a statement.
