A mixed-use, smart growth development in Dorchester’s Fields Corner has been completed, thanks to public funding from the city.
The Viet-AID’s 1460 House was unveiled this morning at a ribbon cutting ceremony. Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Department of Neighborhood Development Director Evelyn Friedman, Viet AID and Fields Corner Main Street were on hand to celebrate the grand opening.
Four businesses in the mixed-use building also received new storefronts that were funded by a $5,000 grant from the city of Boston’s Office of Business Development’s ReStore Program.
The new four-story brick building replaces an under-utilized site that was the former location of Mickey’s Bar. The $12 million project also redeveloped the public pedestrian walkway that connects residents from Adams Street to the Fields Corner MBTA Station. Public funds and private local business owners funded the building. The project also includes 6,200 square feet of new, ground floor retail space for local businesses. The development significantly revitalizes the streetscape of this section of Dorchester Avenue and has created more pedestrian foot traffic for the businesses in the area, according to a statement.
