The structural frame for the Dudley Square Municipal Center was completed last week. The topping out of the building included a ceremony hosted by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and the Dudley Vision Advisory Task Force.
The new municipal office building is a part of Menino’s Dudley Square Vision Project, which seeks to revitalize the once-thriving urban neighborhood. The architectural team for the project is Sasaki Assoc. of Watertown, in association with Mecanoo Architecten from the Netherlands. Arup is providing structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services for the project, and the construction manager is Shawmut Design and Construction.
The 215,000-square-foot, green facility will become the headquarters of Boston Public Schools (BPS). The ground floor of the facility will serve as a public zone, providing both community gathering space and opportunities for economic advancement through retail and dining. The second floor will be outfitted with meeting rooms and serve as the new location for public hearings regarding BPS, and the sixth floor public meeting space and roof terrace will be open to the public.
