Boston-based Shawmut Design and Construction has broken ground on a new $176 million high school project in Billerica.

The 325,000-square-foot Billerica Memorial High School, scheduled to open in fall 2019, is designed to accommodate 1,600 students in grades 8-12 and a 200-pupil pre-kindergarten program. The building is designed around two main axes, including one with a 700-seat auditorium for civic functions and an academic wing.

The project team includes owner’s project manager LeftField and architects Perkins + Will. Four municipal facilities located on the property – the town hall, police and fire stations and Hallenborg ice rink – will remain open during construction, Shawmut Vice President Kevin Sullivan said in a statement.

Additional site amenities will include a multi-sport turf practice field, quad-style commons, turf performance stadium and track complex including a 1,600-seat bleacher concourse with concessions and bathrooms.
