Residents in Shrewsbury are mobilizing against a proposal to build a 21,000-square-foot medical waste disposal facility near a residential neighborhood in town.

More than 120 residents attended a meeting at Town Hall on Thursday to listen to a presentation from an executive from Daniels Sharpsmart Inc.

The facility would process medical waste, including sharps, bandages, IV tubes and lab specimens. Other waste, such as human tissue and anything used for treatment of cancer patients, would be securely transported to the Shrewsbury site for a short time, then trucked to Maryland for incineration.

A company representative said the system is safe.

But residents expressed concern about the safety of their children, the water supply and property values. (AP)
