A transformer fire Monday morning caused the evacuation of Eastern Bank’s operations center in Lynn and a brief disruption to some bank services.
The operations center was shut down, while nearly three dozen members of the Lynn Fire Department doused the flames and a dozen police officers secured the area. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Lynn Fire Department.
Because of the evacuation and loss of electricity to the building, the bank’s call center was unable to take incoming calls and there was a delay in emails being delivered. The branches, ATMs and online banking services were not interrupted.
The building resumed partial operations by 2 p.m. During the four-hour evacuation, hundreds of employees were welcomed at nearby North Shore Community College, which opened its doors for the bank. The call center was back to its normal operations this morning.
"We really appreciate the swift response of the Lynn Fire and Police departments, not to mention the hospitality of our neighbors at North Shore Community College," bank spokesman Andrew Ravens said in a statement. "We’re sorry for any inconvenience to any customers who called or emailed seeking immediate help."
