F.W. Webb's South Boston facilityF.W. Webb has created the city’s first environmentally friendly warehouse, with a 47,657-square-foot facility in South Boston.

The company transformed an existing, underutilized warehouse into a property supplied by renewable energy.

The two-story distribution center and showroom at 307 Dorchester Ave. is LEED certifiable and is more efficient than required by state building codes, according to the Boson Redevelopment Authority (BRA).

Thirteen percent of the site’s heating and hot water needs will be provided by 30 thermal solar panels, an 8,000-gallon energy storage tank and a solar powered system for potable hot water. A geothermal water source connected to the HVAC system will provide cooling for the warehouse. Twelve additional solar photovoltaic panels will reduce the building’s electrical demands on the energy grid and provide surplus energy when the building is closed.

Although the original building was demolished, 75 percent of the construction waste was recycled or salvaged. Approximately 70 construction jobs were created, and 25 F.W. Webb employees will be based at the South Boston location. Fifty-seven parking spaces, including three handicapped spots, are also on-site.

Boston is home to almost 100 U.S. Green Building Council LEED Certified buildings, according to the BRA.
