auctionSpringfield has opened a new era of more aggressively going after tax delinquent properties by raising more than $600,000 at an auction of 34 buildings and lots.

City officials said 32 properties sold at Tuesday night’s auction, including five houses, two commercial buildings and 25 lots, generating $624,400. Two of the properties for sale did not move.

The city was owed $811,394 in delinquent taxes on the sites, not including interest and fees.

Mayor Domenic Sarno told The Republican newspaper the city will continue to be aggressive in collecting taxes, while also providing housing programs and anti-foreclosure programs to assist property owners and help people stay in their homes.

He said the auction helps with neighborhood aesthetics and brings new homeownership opportunities. (AP)
