Boston-based architectural/engineering firm CBI Consulting Inc. recently completed a building conversion for the city of Springfield and has been retained by the city of Salem to conduct a feasibility study for its city hall restoration.
The fast-track project for the city of Springfield resulted in the conversion of a portion of a two-story building for a public school. The conversion from a training and conference center into classrooms will accommodate 100 sixth-grade students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Middle School. It was completed in time for the 2008-2009 school year.
"Facing a two-month turnaround is quite a challenge, but one that our fine staff of professionals was more than capable of accomplishing," said Michael Teller, a principal at CBI Consulting Inc.
Built in 1838, the Greek Revival Salem city hall structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city has engaged CBI Consulting Inc. to conduct a complete review of work required for upgrades of the granite, brick, metal roofing, windows and interior finishes and systems such as plumbing, electrical and HVAC.
The feasibility study will serve as a budgetary framework for future repairs and will address the more immediate need to mitigate the building’s damp basement, which is used for document storage, the company said.
"With the proper upgrades in place, the productivity and efficiency of this beautiful historic building can be ensured," said Teller.
