Springfield’s Union Station will be receiving more than $17 million in federal funding to assist with the renovation of the historic site.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Democratic Rep. Richard Neal and Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray were scheduled to announce the funding this morning in Springfield.
Mayor Domenic Sarno and Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary Richard Davey are also expected to be on hand.
The funding will help with the redevelopment of the 86-year-old station, which officials want to turn into a technologically advanced transportation center. The project is estimated to cost $45 million.
Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2013.
