State Approves Long-Delayed $3.8M Housing Project In Jamaica Plain

Massachusetts yesterday approved $3.8 million for Walnut Avenue Apartments, clearing a major hurdle for the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation (JPNDC) and Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) in their long-delayed redevelopment of a former nursing home.

The site, located at 461 Walnut Ave., will include 30 studio apartments for men and women who have been homeless and a 20-bed respite care facility for BHCHP clients with chronic medical issues.

The Walnut Avenue project was delayed for two years due to a lawsuit by a group of 11 neighbors. In November 2012 the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court denied the plaintiffs’ request for appellate review of a Superior Court judge’s earlier ruling against them, clearing the way for JPNDC and BHCHP to resubmit funding applications and move forward with project design.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2013 and be completed in late 2014, with full occupancy by early 2015.
