Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has selected Sheila Dillon as his new chief of housing and director of the city’s Department of Neighborhood Development (DND), the agency which manages the city’s housing and neighborhood development programs.

Dillon is currently director of the rental assistance bureau at the state Department of Housing and Community Development and previously held housing-related positions at the city of Boston, including deputy director of housing at DND, where she oversaw both affordable housing development and homeless programs.

"I am confident that Sheila will be a tremendous leader and asset to the department of neighborhood development and city of Boston," Menino said in a statement.  "Sheila brings not only a deep understanding of today’s most important housing matters, but a strong record as a leader on these issues which is so critical to cultivating strong neighborhoods where residents and businesses can thrive."

Dillon succeeds Evelyn Friedman, who is leaving to operate the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council. Dillon will start her new role on Sept. 26. Bill Cotter, DND’s deputy director, will serve as acting director until then. Dillon lives in South Boston.
