Nearly 170,000 homes in Greater Boston area are at risk of hurricane-driven storm damage, with estimated $46.7 billion in reconstruction costs, according to a new report.
More than 16,000 homes fall into the extreme risk category, which means they would be affected by all hurricane category levels. Irvine, Calif.-based CoreLogic analyzed properties in 19 states in the Gulf and Atlantic regions.
The New York metro area had the largest potential exposure with 687,412 homes at risk for potential storm damage and reconstruction costs of more than $251 billion. Florida had the largest statewide exposure with 2.5 million homes at risk for $490 billion in damages. Overall, the risk along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts extends to more than 6.5 million homes with nearly $1.5 trillion in potential reconstruction costs.
This year’s report was expanded to include additional categories of single-family residential structures including mobile homes, duplexes, manufactured homes and cabins. The analysis includes properties that are located outside of designated FEMA flood zones but are still at risk for storm surge damage.
