Suffolk Construction Co. Inc. has been awarded a $10 million construction project to build the Central Boston Elder Services (CBES) building in Dudley Square in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood.

Suffolk’s project team will be responsible for managing construction of the 7-story, 50,515 square-foot facility consisting of 56 residential units.

The facility will be constructed on a tight urban site in Dudley Square, which is an area with high vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The building will be constructed using a block-and-plank system, and the façade will consist of brick and cement board panel.

Suffolk will partner with Chia-Ming Sze Architect Inc., which it has collaborated with on past projects, including the Mission Main and Hong Lok House projects.

Construction is scheduled to begin in May and will be completed in April 2011.

Suffolk will also manage physical and technological renovations at the Museum of Science’s Charles Hayden Planetarium.

Suffolk’s work will include renovations to the planetarium’s hemispherical dome and upgrades to the facility’s complex MEP systems, which will allow for the installation of a new surround system and the latest in high-definition immersive video and digital acoustic capabilities.

The total cost of the planetarium renovation will be $9 million, according to a statement.

"We are excited that the Museum of Science, Boston chose us to manage this very important renovation project," said John Fish, Suffolk’s chairman and CEO. "The planetarium renovations will require comprehensive planning, creativity, close collaboration and proactive problem solving. We look forward to demonstrating our technical knowledge and innovative project management approach on this high-profile project for the museum and the city of Boston."

"The museum is delighted to work with Suffolk as we transform the Charles Hayden Planetarium into New England’s most technologically advanced digital theater," said Ioannis Miaoulis, president and director of the Museum of Science. "The planetarium has educated and excited museum visitors for over fifty years; now, the renovation project will enable us to provide visitors with an even richer experience."

Suffolk expects to complete its planetarium renovation work by the fall. Suffolk began work at the planetarium in January. The entire renovation project is scheduled for completion in early 2011.

The planetarium transformation project has been funded through the Charles Hayden Foundation and private donations, with significant support from the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund, Suffolk Construction Company, and the Highland Street Foundation.
