Sun Life Financial is offering two new optional insurance products in a response to a study that calculated the risk and cost of sports injuries in Massachusetts.
"A lot of Massachusetts residents end up in the emergency room each year due to sports injuries," Derek Warner, Sun Life’s New England Group market manager, said in a statement. "Medical treatment can easily run into the thousands of dollars, meaning a family with high deductible health insurance could be out $4,000 or more in aggregate deductibles before their insurance kicks in, and single high deductible coverage averages approximately $2,000."
The group voluntary accident insurance plans, including a preferred plan and an essential plan, are intended to cover the deductible in the event of an ER visit. The preferred plan is geared to employees with active lifestyles and families with athletes who play sports with higher rates of injury, and the essential plan is designed for younger workers and employees with low savings.
According to the study, basketball is projected to send the most Massachusetts residents to the emergency room this year. Football ranked second. Downhill skiing and ice hockey cause the most expensive visits to the ER in Massachusetts, costing, on average, $6,962 and $4,562, respectively.
"As more workers adopt high deductible health insurance, we want people to understand how to protect themselves and their families against the financial risks of an injury, whether due to recreation or a random accident," Tyler Thims, Sun Life’s New England voluntary benefits practice leader, said in a statement.
