Apartment seekers are turning toward "greener" lifestyles at their apartment communities, according to a new survey by Apartments.com.
Eighty-eight percent of respondents said the environment is an important issue, which is evident in the way they live and even search for and select an apartment.
The majority of Apartments.com visitors said they are doing their part to reduce their carbon footprints and ranked the top five ways they are going "green" in their apartments.
More than 83 percent of respondents turn off lights, computers and appliances when not in use, 72 percent said they run the dishwasher only with a full load, 71 percent recycle paper, plastic and glass, 70 percent use energy-efficient light bulbs and 53 percent purchase "green products."
Almost a quarter of respondents said they would rent an apartment that did not offer "green" amenities or programs and 58 percent are on the fence. More than 25 percent would pay more in rent to save money on energy costs.
