Do Granite Staters have it almost 20 percent better than Bostonians when it comes to housing costs? That’s the conclusion reached by a new study from mortgage research firm HSH.com.
Using factors including housing costs, mortgage rates, school performance, income, sales, and gas taxes, the site compared 12 major cities to their "shoulder areas" – regions in adjacent states still within commuting distance.
For Boston workers, the firm’s analysis suggests that a move to New Hampshire could save them about 18.1 percent overall, compared with a 6.6 percent savings from moving to Rhode Island or a 9.7 percent savings moving to Boston’s Massachusetts suburbs. The primary reason for the gap is the fact that housing costs are much lower in New Hampshire, the survey found. A typical mortgage payment for a 30-year mortgage is 36.4 percent lower in New Hampshire than in Boston.
"Where you choose to live may save or cost you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on mortgage payments and taxes every year," said Keith Gumbinger, vice president of HSH.com, in a statement.
