The Department of Public Health reported more new COVID-19 cases Thursday than it has in months – 986 new cases of the highly-contagious virus that has been spreading largely uncontrolled for months.
With the average COVID-19 positive test rate hovering around a pandemic-era low of 1 percent for the past week, Gov. Charlie Baker said Tuesday that health metrics are “in a great place” even as he stressed the importance of continued vigilance against the highly infectious coronavirus.

Charlie Baker launched a new colored-coded system to label cities and towns based of the severity of their COVID-19 infection rates on Tuesday, initiating a targeted approach to virus containment that he said should help inform and guide the state, communities and their residents in making decisions about how to contain the coronavirus’s spread.
