Discount retailer Target Corp. has completed a purchase of 15 acres of land from Barnes Municipal Airport in Westfield where it plans to build a distribution center.

The Airport Commission received $751,000 for the land.

The estimated $100 million Target distribution center is expected to be completed by 2012 and may generate as many as 500 jobs.

Mayor Michael Boulanger tells The Republican of Springfield that the project is "great for the city."

The distribution center will bring the western Massachusetts community an estimated $727,000 in annual tax payments for nine years, then about $1.8 million annually after that. The company bought 122 adjacent acres last month. (AP)
