Target Corp. is seeking to develop a 648,500-square-foot distribution center on a 120-acre property located just north of the Massachusetts Turnpike in Westfield.
The project would include 1,083 parking spaces, 578 for trailer storage, and generate 1,175 weekday vehicle trips, according to a traffic study. The discount retailer estimates the facility would employ 520 people.
Approximately 88 acres of the site are classified as a priority habitat for four state-listed endangered species, state Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Kathleen Theoharides noted in an environmental notification form certificate issued Jan. 21.
Three bird species and a moth known as the Pine Barrens Speranza are all protected by the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act, and could require Target to apply for a conservation management permit to avoid disturbing their habitats.
Target originally acquired 122 acres of the site in 2009 and another 15 acres from the Westfield Barnes Municipal Airport.
In addition to the state environmental review, the project requires site plan and special permit approval from the Westfield planning board. The development is not seeking any financial assistance from the state.
