Kiss The Kardashian Kard Goodbye
It’s not easy keeping up with the Kardashian sisters. Those Dash Dolls seem to have it all – reality television shows, retail stores and magazine spreads, not to mention their exotic beauty. It’s no wonder the Armenian family has captured the country’s attention – and now our wallets.
The must have item of this holiday season appeared to the “Kardashian Kard.” Sisters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney seem to have no trouble affording a lavish lifestyle of Bentleys, Jimmy Choos and designer handbags. So, obtaining a prepaid debit card bearing the girls’ faces could provide the same sort of financial freedom, right? After all, with The Teller approaching the big 3-0, a replica of Kim’s birthday present to herself (a Rolls Royce) is in order.
It sounds good in theory. Teens that idolize the stars from “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” can use this prepaid card without worrying about overdraft fees. But buyers beware: just to buy the card and use it costs $59.95 for six months, or $99.95 for a year. That doesn’t include any money on the card.
Fees stack up on the prepaid debit card. It costs big bucks to keep using the card, to withdraw cash from an ATM and to check the card’s balance. Long story short: The card’s bank fees were much less popular than the trio pictured on the plastic.
Within a few weeks of its debut, the sisters cut ties with the “kard” and the MasterCard was canceled. Critics accused the K’s of using their celebrity status to put out a card with fees not normally associated with credit cards. Now, even The Teller has a cynical side, but this was probably just a business venture gone wrong. Chances are it will be forgotten well before the next issue of “In Touch” publishes a front page story with Khloe’s baby bump.
