“Dutch space tourism company, Space Expedition Corporation (SXC), and world-renowned financial markets trader Anton Kreil are about to make a giant financial leap and go one step beyond.”
That’s how the press release begins. One step beyond what? It’s never mentioned specifically, but allow The Teller to offer you this: Kreil wants to be the first person to complete a financial markets transaction in space.
Now, in addition to being the first trade in space, Kreil says the stunt will be “the highest recorded financial transaction.” Having worked at both Goldman Sachs and Lehman Bros., we imagine Kreil knows a good deal about trading while high.
The Teller kind of admires the way Kreil thinks nothing of how a stunt like this makes the financial sector look to the rest of us. What the heck, why not just bring Jamie Dimon with you, and have Dire Straits play “Money for Nothing” as the trade is completed. Then there would be absolutely no mistake about who exactly these fellows are in it for. But it’s better than that.
Kreil also apparently intends to make a pound sterling/U.S. dollar currency trade, as well as a stock trade.
“We’re currently in talks with publicly-listed companies in the U.S., U.K. and Europe with regards to sponsoring the trade,” Kreil told some Brit magazine. “We’re looking at doing a big one and the stock will most likely be announced a few weeks before the flight.”
The banking sector also wants a piece of the action, and Kreil said he is also in talks with investment banks and brokers who want to sponsor the execution. Of course.
“From the companies’ perspective, the message of being a true global pioneer is a great message. It’s an amazing situation to be involved in,” Kreil said.
Sell it, baby.
The whole thing is supposed to take less than an hour. Time well spent, The Teller would say.
