Springfield, Taunton and Canton have received a total of $260,000 in federal stimulus funds to clean up and re-use contaminated sites.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grants are being awarded and implemented by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP).
The Yankee Oil site at 1071-1101 Dwight St. in Springfield has received $160,000. The 1.6-acre site used to house an oil terminal, an auto repair shop and a gasoline station. Eighteen underground storage tanks have already been removed from the site, but contamination from the tanks remains. The project is expected to include additional monitoring, soil removal and groundwater treatment. The property was taken by the city by tax title foreclosure.
In Taunton, the Church Fuel Oil site at 494 Weir St. has received $40,000. The site is composed of three parcels totaling 3.5 acres of land in a residential neighborhood that have been abandoned since the early 1980s.
Among other environmental issues is the presence of two abandoned gasoline underground storage tanks that are suspected to have leaked. The project would include removing the contents of the tanks, then removing the tanks and any contamination associated with them. According to the city of Taunton, this work will help leverage additional private sector and nonprofit funding to address other areas of contamination at the site.
In Canton, the Blue Hills Regional Technical School site at 800 Randolph St. has been awarded $60,000. underground gas tank was removed, but contamination remains above levels which would allow the site to be closed out and re-used. The project will include additional environmental assessment and evaluation, followed by remediation of the existing contaminants. Upon completion of the work, the site will be utilized for educational and recreational uses.
