Boston is slated to receive a $1.87 million grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which it will use to continue work on the Fairmount corridor development, including a planned expansion of a commuter rail line through Dorchester.

The city of Worcester and the Montachusett Regional Planning Commission will also receive grants, in the amount of $930,000 and $129,500 respectively.

Worcester’s money will go toward the creation of a new master plan to reuse the former Crompton and Knowles Loomworks factory site, and revitalize the surrounding neighborhood.

The Montachusett Regional Planning Commission will use its funds to develop smart growth plans for the neighborhood surrounding the future Wachusett commuter rail stop. Work began on the station last year.

The funds are part of HUD’s Sustainable Communities program, intended to help communities who want to change zoning and building codes to promote mixed-use development, affordable housing and the re-use of older buildings for new purposes.
