Lowell-based construction management firm TRC Cos. Inc. has reported net income for the third quarter of fiscal 2009 of approximately $500,000, compared with a net loss of approximately $4.9 million for the comparable period of fiscal 2008.

The net loss for the nine month period ended March 27 was approximately $18.8 million, compared with a net loss of approximately $93 million for the comparable period of last year.

The net loss for the first nine months of fiscal 2009 includes "a non-cash goodwill and intangible asset impairment charge of $21.4 million and the benefit of a $1 million federal income tax refund and related interest," the company said.

Excluding the non-cash goodwill and intangible asset impairment charge and the tax refund, TRC said it would have recorded net income for the first nine months of fiscal 2009 of $1.6 million.

The net loss for the first nine months of the prior fiscal year included $88.8 million in "non-cash charges for goodwill impairment and provision of a full valuation allowance against net deferred tax assets," TRC reported. Excluding the effect of those non-cash charges, TRC said it would have recorded a net loss of $4.2 million.
