The embezzlement trial of former Lawrence school superintendent Wilfredo Laboy is slated to start today in Salem Superior Court.

Laboy has pleaded not guilty to charges of fraud and embezzlement for allegedly using school department employees and resources for his own purposes, and to one count of illegal possession of alcohol on school property. Prosecutors say he used school employees to take out the trash at his Methuen home, drive around his son and grandchildren, wire his home computers and more.

Laboy, hired in 2000, was fired by the School Committee in April 2010, about a month after he was indicted and arraigned.

Laboy’s attorney told The Eagle-Tribune that there is not one "scintilla" of evidence against his client.

The developer of the future Seaport Square – a 23-acre office, entertainment and residential district still to be built – is attempting to snag Google away from Cambridge, according to reports. (AP)
