The state’s total unemployment rate dropped to 4.7 percent in January from the revised December rate of 4.9, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced Thursday.
The preliminary job estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate Massachusetts lost 2,500 jobs in January. Over the month job gains occurred in the trade, transportation and utilities; construction; information; manufacturing; and government industries.
From January 2015 to January 2016, BLS estimates Massachusetts has added 48,900 jobs.
“While the preliminary estimates indicate jobs are down over the month, several sectors experienced job growth in January. Construction added 2,200 jobs; manufacturing is up 700 jobs, and trade, transportation and utilities was up 3,800 jobs over the month,” Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Ronald L. Walker II said in a statement.
The January state unemployment rate remains lower than the national rate of 4.9 percent reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
