A Danish company that creates wind turbines is ready to commence construction on a 27,000-square-foot research, development and testing facility in Marlborough.

Vestas Americas hopes to break ground by the end of the month. The company just closed the deal for the 8.8-acre site last week, paying $1.85 million for the land, according to reports.

The company currently leases space in an office building at 100 Crowley Drive, and its new facility will be built on an adjacent lot. Preliminary plans consist of a two-story administrative wing and a large warehouse area. Marlborough’s City Council last month inked a tax increment financing deal that will give the company a break on property taxes for 10 years, beginning next July.

The firm is expected to spend about $16 million on the first phase of developing the building, between acquisition, equipment and labor, according to reports. The company anticipates it being finished sometime in the spring. The plans leave room for additional expansion at the site.

The new building would allow Vestas to consolidate two offices it has in Hudson and Marlborough into the office space it now leases on Crowley Drive, where the firm employs about 34 people. The new facility would employ about 100.
